True to the spirit of the tough, determined members of the North Pole expeditions, the Commend system of Swedish icebreaker “Oden” is still working reliably after decades of unfailing service under the extreme conditions of the arctic circle. Most of the switchboard gear and communication terminals on board have withstood heavy use without a problem and are still in fine working order. Only very few of them are slowly starting to show their age and need replacing after decades of use, as our local service partner Knut Uller reports. The cable network is in good condition, he says, as are the line cards, thanks to the equipment’s high-end design and build quality. As a result, it will take only some limited upgrading to ensure that the system will continue to operate reliably for years to come. As part of the intended upgrade, around 10 stations will be replaced with current analogue stations. These will interface seamlessly with the old switchgear, thanks to built-in proven Commend Evergreen Technology. Other improvements will be introduced in steps to match the operator’s budget plans. This includes, for example, replacing the EE-560 weatherproof stations by our more robust current models, and upgrading some of the cards, transformers and such. With only this moderate ‘anti-aging treatment’, the Commend system will go on to provide reliable on-board communication service until the ship reaches its end of life in 2030. It’s all in a life’s work for a Commend system.
